Critics' reviews
"'Mothers' Instinct' doesn't breathe: It hasn't the grandeur of great melodrama, nor the savoir-faire of great noir"
Guy Lodge: Variety
"The beats are played as unsubtly as you’d expect within a melodrama that was likely aspiring to the highs of Douglas Sirk, but it crucially understands that sincerity is the key to selling such broad emotion"
Alistair Ryder: The Film Stage
"The fatal mistake with this film... is that it takes itself so drearily seriously and seems to think it's offering an incisive critique of mid-20th century patriarchy, or some such"
Leslie Felperin: The Hollywood Reporter

"Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain excel in psychodrama that's either ludicrous on purpose or just by accident (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
Donald Clarke: Irish Times
"Susan Sontag famously defined camp as 'a seriousness that fails'. Where does that leave failed camp? Exhibit A: the duffness of 'Mothers' Instinct' (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
Tim Robey: Telegraph
